It is January in 1977 – the station KHJ in Los Angeles – the Promo “ZORK” a cash giveaway with a difference.
The length of the promo…
7 MINUTES LONG!
What The?
Yes folks – you can hear it here – grab a coffee first and enjoy:
The original seven-minute promo for KHJ’s “Zork” is outstanding in it’s weirdness!
The illustration is Bobby Ocean’s drawing of himself (on the phone) and Charlie Van Dyke (in the hat).
They wrote it and voiced it together, no it wasn’t an in-house joke either – “Zork” himself wandered the streets of L.A. giving away cash.
According to PD Charlie Van Dyke, “When it was time for him to leave, ZORK boarded a private Lear jet (remember, this IS RKO we’re talking about) and the KHJ crew gathered at the airport for his departure.”

Bobby Ocean said on the SOUNDCLOUD page : “We invented a mythical character, deputized one of my siblings, masking his face and dressing him in different outfits from Western Costume every day. Then we hit the streets in a shiny black stretch limo full of cash and gave it all away, recording the elation. Great Promos. But THIS is the very first of them, and, arguably, KHJ’s longest promo.”
Absolute brilliance!
