On Air Naming of Your Job Title?

On-Air: Are You A Jock, The Talent, or a Personality?

Posted on September 15, 2022November 8, 2022 By earlp

I have been pulled up and set straight in a couple of emails that have been sent to me recently for using multiple terms in my posts about on-air voices, or on-air jocks, or on-air talent, or host, or personalities… OK – I admit it!

Bruce Willis: Moonlighting

I tend to swap the titles depending on how and what I am talking about – I prefer ‘Personality’ but have been told by many people that no-one these days calls themselves that unless they have a BIG HEAD about themselves and their show!

I tend to use ‘Jock’ a LOT as that’s how the people I work with every day refer to themselves as.

But at a previous station, only the breakfast team were EVER referred to as ‘on-air talent’.

And funnily enough the only ‘hosts’ I knew, only ever worked the late night shifts?

So maybe you can understand my confusion.

All of them do have personalities, some not much of one, others WAY over the top!

Some prefer JOCK as their persona for being on-air was very often different to their real life (and sometimes their on-air names reflected that, compared to their real world names).

Some are definitely ‘hosting’ their shows, and some who just voice track their shows, prefer ‘voice’.

So what is your preferred naming preference?

Let me know below – the majority wins, and from now on I will use that name – if no-one votes in the comments – then I will continue use which ever name I think suits the post.
