Long time readers of this blog will know how much I enjoy Radio Ink. I am a bit of a fanboy.
This issue though had me scratching my head and going back to previous issues to check out a couple of things. But we will get to that – first on with the review of THIS issue.

This months issue covers Radio’s top 2023 African American Leaders and the NABOB Executive Director Jim Winston – and – a lot of stories about sales…
As many of you know (as soon as I get access to the latest issue, the first article I read is…) and I am very upfront about this, I am a big fan of Roy H Williams and this months article from Roy about creating ‘mental movies’ and ‘sharing the pain’ with your listener is a great one to read for all copywriters.
The feature on NABOB Executive Director Jim Winston was insightful, fascinating and I can see why Jim has been at the helm for as long as he has – he is truly passionate about radio. Everything about radio. It’s a brilliant read, and very inspirational.
Next I had a great time reading the Radio Ink “Radio’s 2023 African American Leaders” feature and I love the responses from those interviewed about their journeys, how they think the industry can improve and advice for people looking to break into radio.
Next, let’s return to the top of my review – the amount of stories about “SALES” in Radio Ink has been on a steady increase in the past 12+ months – this issue has a grand total of 4 stories. Sometimes it is 3, sometimes 4, rarely is it 2 – but previously they have been more spaced out in each issue so I have never noticed it before. But this time…
We have:
- Lisa Goldberg’s “Level Up in 2023” under Sales Management – on page 7
- Alec drake’s “The Five New A-B-Cs Of Sales”, again under Sales Management – on page 10
- Pat Bryson talks about how to “Catch A Shooting Star”, filed under Sales Management – on page 11
- Stephanie Downs’ “6 Ways To Accelerate Sales in 2023”, under Sales – on page 12
And I know I have raised this before on this blog, what about the people who work in Production? Traffic? Promotions? Copywriters? Engineers? All of the behind the scenes people who work in radio and support everything that gets done to make those sales happen, that bring people back and get radio to air on a daily basis. The industry is not just about CEO’s, PD’s, Sales, Sales Manager’s, and Station Managers.
Apologies to Ed Ryan (who is Radio Inks hard working Editor) I know – I sound like I have an axe to grind – but I seriously would like some more diversity from Radio Ink about other people who work in the industry – and who do also read their magazine. Please?
Anyway, I will leave it there for today. Overall another issue of Radio Ink that I have enjoyed spending an hour and a half devouring from cover to cover.
